The first town in Taiwan to receive international Cittaslow certification was Fenglin Township in Hualien County in 2014. In 2016, Sanyi Township and Nanzhuang Township in Miaoli County, as well as Dalin Township in Chiayi County, were certified. In response to the need for certification and the promotion of Cittaslow, the Cittaslow Taiwan Alliance was officially established in 2017. The main members of the alliance, apart from the towns already certified by the Cittaslow headquarters in Italy, including Hualien’s Fenglin, Chiayi’s Dalin, Miaoli’s Nanzhuang, and Miaoli’s Sanyi, were led by the first chairman, Mayor Xiao Wenlong of Fenglin, who hoped to invite other towns wishing to become international Cittaslow towns to join the alliance. As a result, Taichung City’s Heping District, Gukeng Township in Yunlin County, Majia Township and Jhutian Township in Pingtung County, Yuli Township in Hualien County, Chihshang Township and Luye Township in Taitung County, and Dongyin Township in Lianjiang County joined the alliance, totaling 12 towns and districts. In 2022, Mayor Lü Mingzhong of Sanyi Township in Miaoli became the second chairman of the alliance. Additionally, Jhutian in Pingtung became the fifth internationally certified Cittaslow town in 2022.

To ensure that the members of the Cittaslow Taiwan Alliance are committed to environmental conservation, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting a slow and healthy lifestyle, the alliance established seven key areas and 72 indicators for towns to meet the standards of an international Cittaslow town. Since 2020, the Cittaslow Taiwan Alliance has held its annual meeting, with the first meeting organized by Jhutian Township, to promote a new “slow” travel model and attract international visitors to experience the slow lifestyle. The second annual meeting was held in 2021 in Chihshang Township, Taitung, successfully raising public awareness of international Cittaslow towns.

After the global pandemic, the third and fourth annual meetings were held in Sanyi and Nanzhuang in Miaoli in 2022 and 2023, inviting the international Cittaslow vice-chairman to Taiwan to share the experience of South Korea’s Cittaslow towns. This also opened up opportunities for exchanges between Taiwan’s Cittaslow towns and South Korea’s Cittaslow towns. This year, Chihshang Township in Taitung County also received international Cittaslow certification and will host the 5th Cittaslow Taiwan Alliance Annual Meeting, inviting scholars from Australia, South Korea, and Thailand to participate and exchange experiences with international Cittaslow towns, further enhancing Taiwan’s Cittaslow visibility on the international stage.

In 2020, Jhutian Township in Pingtung successfully received international Cittaslow certification. In June 2024, Mayor Lin Jianhong of Chihshang Township in Taitung will personally attend the international Cittaslow annual meeting in Italy to receive the certification. Additionally, Dongyin, a town with military and maritime ecological characteristics in Lianjiang County, initiated its application for Cittaslow certification in December 2023, marking a significant step towards making Taiwan an international highlight.
